A stunning dressing table, it is very much in the style of furniture made by Shapland & Petter of Barnstable, therefore we are attributing this piece to them however we cannot be 100% certain; please see information about Shapland & Petter furniture design below.  A superbly crafted piece, it features;

  • circa early 1900’s
  • Arts & Crafts & Art Nouveau design

  • solid oak construction

  • rich golden colour tones

  • superb cross quarter cut wood grain figuring

  • overhanging cornice with shaped supporting brackets

  • tilting bevel edge mirror door

  • beautifully shaped mirror support

  • a projecting single door cupboard

  • Art Nouveau repoussé copper panel feature to the cupboard door

  • curved pierced crest to the cupboard w shaped gallery & base supports

  • bevel edge top

  • 4 bevel edge, hand-cut dovetail joined drawers

  • complete matching Florentine bronze loop & bail handles

  • panel sides

  • shaped apron to the front base

  • 4 square tapered legs

  • the mirror is easily removed for easy transporting

  • From our research, the Arts & Crafts design, the Art Nouveau repoussé copper panels, the use of high quality oak in particular showing medullar rays from cross ‘quarter cut’ sections and the distinct orange and yellow colouring, allare very much in the furniture designs of Shapland and Petter of Barnstable. Also, there is a three dimensional presence in their pieces; rather than making a wardrobe, for example, as a box with decoration they incorporated projecting cupboards, horizontal curved shelves or drawers to break the flat plane, overhanging cornices with supporting brackets which continue to the sides take the eye round the structure.   Apparently, the test of the quality of design is to view pieces from the side rather than the front and very often this shows the powerful structural features as well as the elegance in line and sense of proportion.
