This magnificent, fully lockable campaign chest was made by Silver & Co of London.  Founded c1838, Stephen Winkworth Silver & Co became well-known retailers of campaign and exploration equipment. They produced and supplied clothing and furniture for the traveller, primarily designed for the military and emigrants.  In 1861 Silver & Co advertised in the London Commercial Directory that they could supply 'furniture for camp, barrack, cabin, and colonial use’.

Campaign furniture is specifically made to break down into sections for ease of travel.  It was designed to be packed up and carried in a march or for travelling. Such furniture has been used by traveling armies since at least the time of Julius Caesar, however is more commonly associated with British Army officers.  If only this superb piece could talk – what stories it could tell!
