This delightful cabinet was made by Burge Brothers. In the 1930’s, their furniture manufacturing factory was based in the Commonwealth Block on Little Lonsdale St, Melbourne. A new factory was constructed at 135-157 Racecourse Road Flemington in 1945-46. The Commonwealth Block (Lonsdale, Spring and Little Lonsdale Streets in Melbourne) is historically significant and their building on Racecourse Rd, Flemington still stands and is of architectural and historical significance. It features;
- Birdseye Maple timber veneer & Macassar Striped Ebony timber veneer construction
- circa 1940’s
- exquisite wood grain figuring
- bow front design
- glass top (removable)
- single dovetail-joined drawer
- complete & matching etched handles
- single door cabinet
- single shelf
- striking contrasting timber veneer plinth base
- makers stamp; H Burge Brothers
Condition overview; in good condition relative to its age, it is a sturdy, beautifully crafted piece and the door and drawer work well. As expected on a piece of this vintage, it displays general wear, knock and surface marks (particularly to the top).
