This magnificently crafted cedar chest was made by The Honderich Furniture Company in Ontario.  They were once popular graduation or wedding gifts, and have been handed down through generations.   Christian R. Honderich and August Eidt founded the H.E. Furniture Company in Milverton, Ontario in 1911.  In 1917, they began to manufacture cedar chests.  The also made desks, book cases, coffee tables, and dining room suites.  The oils in the cedar wood were said to repel moths; if the claims are true, then there once must have been very few moths flying around East Fourteenth Street where the Tennessee Red Cedar and Novelty Company once made furniture.  It features;

  • cedar timber & cedar veneer construction
  • circa 1930

  • exquisite wood grain figuring

  • bullnose front lid w metal struts

  • brass push button lock – automatically locks when closed, push button to unlock (no key)

  • makers & red seal labels

  • pierced internal suspended insert

  • carved timber moulding

  • stepped convex front base

  • scallop central apron

Condition overview; in good condition, relative to its vintage, the lid and drawer work seamlessly and the internal condition is very good and clean.  As expected on a well-used piece of this age, it displays general and age-related wear, tear, knock and surface marks and some inconsistency to the finish, but nothing major to note.

Dimensions; 1125mm wide x 485mm deep x 605mm high (lid open; 1125mm high)

Please review the photos and the condition overview as they form part of the description.  It is impossible to mention / photograph every mark, therefore apart from general wear and tear marks, we endeavour to report and capture as many specific marks or damage, however we may inadvertently miss something.  With this in mind; we encourage and highly recommend viewing of items.
