This magnificent piece has a fully working Joseph Fitter screw expander; used to open the table to accommodate addition leaves.  Joseph Fitter operated a machinist shop where he produced screw expanders as well as screw expanders for piano stools, tables and other applications at 210 Cheapside, Birmingham England by the name of Britannia Works.  It features;

  • solid oak construction
  • circa 1870โ€™s

  • complete & fully operational screw expander (no handle/winder)

  • large expanding capacity

  • superbly crafted ring turned & carved fluted legs

Condition overview; in good condition relative to its age, it is a very solid and sturdy piece, making it a perfect restoration project for the addition of a table top and additional leaves to fit if so desired.  As expected on a used piece of this age, it displays age-related and general wear, tear, knock and surface marks and some inconsistency to the finish.
